Saturday, October 31: Release with Maeve Friedman
Class Description: Class will warm up the body using several movement methods. A slow beginning will allow us to arrive, wake up the mind, and drop into our bodies’ softness and specificity. Borrowing from contemporary Floorwork, release technique, CounterTechnique, yoga and the breath, we will explore effort qualities, momentum + speed, flow, weightedness, ease, and voluptuous movement. Dancers will be encouraged to lean into what feels good, while seeking clarity, texture, and risk, challenging our own individual range of movement. Expect phrasework, fun music, inversions, and lots of joy in dancing together, celebrating our bodies and cheering each other on.
MAEVE FRIEDMAN (she/her) is a freelance dancer, writer, and yogi based in Salt Lake City, originally from Maryland and Maine. She received her BFA in Dance from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts in 2023, and has since found a home in SLC, where she adores the intimate collaborations that have unfolded organically in this small and eager city. Maeve has danced with SALT2 Contemporary Dance Company, Utah Opera, and Fleet Co-Operative, and has performed works by Courtney Mazeika, Noelle Kayser, Kellie St. Pierre, Megan O’Brien, Nicole Von Arx, David Dorfman, Alex Ketley, Brandon Alley, Trisha Brown, Shen Wei, José Limón, Igal Perry, and others. She currently collaborates on various site-specific, experimental live dance and film projects with Constance Anderson/Sock Opera Dance Company. As a maker, Maeve and her choreographic partner Mads Ward have presented work through Playground Dance Project, SLCPL’s series 12 Minutes Max, Monday Movement Lab, and Queer Spectra Arts Festival. Maeve is passionate about building community and opportunities for training in the city. She works as the marketing manager for Dance Class For Humans, and teaches for The Woods Dance Project. Maeve is inspired by the boundless possibility of improvisation, writing poems, her favorite music, memories, + the body.
