We are THRILLED to have the opportunity to share this work with you! Like many things in 2020, The Bewildering Beauty of Losing One’s Way was cancelled just before it made its way to the stage due to Covid-19. Created in collaboration with Westminster College’s Dance Company, the quartet has been reimagined a year later as an outdoor performance for camera. The dance was filmed as a part of ONE SHOT, a one-take performance event on the Westminster campus this April. The Bewildering Beauty of Losing One’s Way begins mid-way through the performance.

What: ONE SHOT: A Point-of-View Movement Piece

When: April 17th, 7:30pm MST

Who: Performed by Westminster College, with choreography by Nichele Woods and other artists.

Where/When: On demand! See the show here: https://vimeo.com/531411285

Program Notes:

This work is a continuation of my current research on the impacts of emotional experiences upon physicality. I am interested in the embodiment of an emotional landscape as a way to deepen our understanding of the dynamic self, as well as to expand our capacity for physical expressivity. In this particular dance, we are exploring a spectrum of physical in/stability. We explore the possibilities we may find in embracing being un/grounded, un/certain, im/balanced, and how the shifting dynamics of various partnerships can further inform us of our complex selves.

The original, pre-pandemic piece was created for the proscenium stage and included disorienting floorwork as a part of this exploration. For the safety of performing outside on concrete, the piece was largely re-explored and reworked—a wonderful opportunity that is as shiny as a silver lining can get. The ideas driving the piece were considered in how the camera was to be incorporated, as well, a challenge which became an exciting new element in the work.
