April 18 + 19, 2023
I have the absolute pleasure of creating works with my students in the Professional Training Division of Ballet West Academy every year. In 2022, with the support of the Academy I finally developed a new contemporary ensemble, Current, that I had been dreaming of for years. Composed of 12 dancers, Current is a place for dancers who wanted to be pushed in their contemporary work and want to have the intimate experience of a performing ensemble.
Current, performing both nights:
Where the Water Was is an expansive, collaborative dance created with Current and inspired by the urgent need to protect the Great Salt Lake. Movement material was made by and with each of the twelve individual dancers to create a weaving storm of movement. Created this past Fall, I am so thrilled for this dance to finally make it to the stage.
Tuesday, April 18th only:
Professional Training Division levels 1 and 2 move in and out of the dance work, From the Pod. In considering our theme, “metamorphosis,” I was reminded of pods, Covid, and how we grow within, and with, our communities. This piece isn’t about Covid but is rather inspired by how we can thrive in our communities, keep each other safe, and what having that support can mean for the individual.
Also on the program:
Renowned Utah choreographer and dance educator, Francisco Gella, presents his work, Revirado, performed by the Ballet West Academy Trainees. Other works for students levels 1 through the Professional Training Division include choreography by Natalie Desch, Bashaun Williams, Izzy Arrieta, Jessica Baynes, Sammy Gomm, Cayla Robinson, and Kramer Snead.
